Gabigol Faces Two-Year Doping Ban for Attempted Fraud

A harsh blow for Gabigol. The former Inter forward has been suspended for two years for attempted fraud in doping tests. This was the decision of the Brazilian sports anti-doping tribunal for the events of April 8, 2023, during a surprise check at a Flamengo training session, on the eve of the match against Fluminense.

The Brazilian striker will have to serve the ban, which will conclude in April 2025, by which time Gabigol's contract will have already expired. The '96-born player has announced an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The incident that led to Gabigol's disqualification

The case dates back to, precisely, April 8, 2023, on the eve of the match against Fluminense, the final of the Carioca championship, when there was a surprise doping control at the Flamengo retreat. According to what was written by UoL, Gabigol first insulted the doping commissioners complaining about always being targeted by the controls, then tried to hide his genitals while collecting the urine (which is prohibited) before handing over the container with the urine open. These are the facts that led to the charge of attempted fraud during the doping control process (violation of article 122 of the Anti-Doping Code). The verdict was not unanimous, with 5 votes of guilt and 4 acquitting him.
