VATICAN CITY - Black smoke. The first day of the conclave ended without a new leader for the Roman Catholic Church. Black smoke came out the chimney installed above the Sistine Chapel at 7.41 p.m Tuesday, meaning that the 115 cardinal electors didn’t agree on the successor of Pope emeritus Benedict XVI. In the afternoon, they entered the Sistine Chapel to formally begin the secret process of selecting the next pontiff. Just after 4.30 p.m., chanting the names of the saints in Latin, the cardinal proceeded into the Chapel with Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgment” and other masterpieces high above them on the frescoed walls. Tomorrow morning there will be two more rounds of ballots and the next smoke signal is expected around midday.
