«In March 2020, I underwent surgery, they removed half of my lung. During that period, I was alone, I didn't want anyone, I shielded myself, I believe deep down I wanted to play the hero». With these words Valerio Scanu shared, a year ago, his illness revealing that he had even lied to his parents to keep them away. Today, with some time passed, the singer explained why for years he did not want to talk about the cancer that struck him.

Words from Valerio Scanu

«A few years ago, I found myself in this situation personally, even before what happened to my father - Valerio Scanu explained to Storie Italiane -. At one point, I was operated on a lung because there was a tumor. I wanted to do everything in private, first because the pandemic had just erupted and so relatives could not come and could not be close to me and then I wanted to protect my family. Because suppose they see it or it's written in the newspapers, suppose the word gets around».

The singer added: «It doesn't become a problem, but I shared it after years when everything was over. I didn't feel like doing it immediately because my family was far away, we didn't know what it was about and how I should face the situation. So, I wanted to keep it to myself».

Valerio Scanu then explained that he was also afraid of the public's reaction. «You never know how the public will take it - Valerio Scanu explained -. Maybe one says it because they feel the need to do so and the public attacks you thinking that you want to play the victim. So, I preferred not to say it. I underwent surgery alone. In general, the public has its opinion. When you live it firsthand, it's tough. Maybe out of a hundred comments, there's one that attacks you and that devastates you, so you prefer not to say it. At least, I chose to do it this way».
