A final game before going to sleep turned into tragedy in a home on the outskirts of the capital. A two-year-old child swallowed a part of a toy and, rescued in very serious condition, died in hospital after a day of agony. The drama took place in Monterotondo, in the province of Rome. Mattia Gabriele Micarone dies during the Christmas holidays, Pescara mourns its 'little angel': he was only 4 years old. The alarm went off late on Boxing Day. The little boy, who had turned two a few months ago, was at home with his mom and dad, a couple of Moldovan citizens who have been living and working in the town for some time. For reasons still to be clarified, he swallowed a piece of a toy he usually used. Domenico Buonamico died at 22, the autopsy: struck by a 'sudden illness'. The body found in the apartment in Bari. When the parents realized that he had swallowed something, they called for help and the child was rushed to the hospital. Arriving in cardiac arrest, his condition appeared very serious from the start and he was transferred by helicopter to the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, where he died today. Investigations are underway to reconstruct the exact dynamics of what happened and to determine if there are any liabilities. The toy is also under the investigators' lens. It remains to be clarified whether the ingested part was removable or if it broke and whether it is suitable for a two-year-old child. The child's parents will probably be heard to accurately reconstruct what happened on Tuesday evening. And in Sicily in recent weeks a similar tragedy was unfolding. An eight-month-old boy risked suffocation after putting in his mouth the residue of a toy chewed by his dog. He was saved by an emergency tracheotomy performed at the Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania. The incident occurred at the end of last November, but was only made known today, after the check-up. The mother realized that he had quickly grabbed and put a piece of plastic in his mouth. The woman tried to dislodge it but without success. Then the rush to the hospital. The child underwent a tracheotomy and then, by laryngoscopic route, the foreign body was definitively removed. The child suffered a severe edema of the upper airways and remained in intensive care for several days. He celebrated his ninth month of life in a hospital bed, but was happily at home for Christmas.
