In the 800m, the Roman swimmer repeated tonight the placement of the 1,500m, in a race that was and indeed became the domain of Katie Ledecky. The American led from the dive to the touch of the plate in the race that crowns her as the absolute champion of swimming. Tonight's gold is in fact her ninth Olympic gold, equaling the female record of Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina.

It was of little use to Quadarella, whose odds were exactly on the edge between a podium and a"wooden medal" to have swum to the Italian record of 8'14''55: the Roman was third for only about fifty meters, while ahead Ledecky and Titmus had their own race. But then the other American, Paige Madden, turned on the turbo, and from the final 150 meters, she pulled away. Italian swimming now awaits the other marathon swimmer. Gregorio Paltrinieri confirms his excellent form: after the bronze in the 800m freestyle, which allowed him to become the first Italian ever in swimming to reach the podium in three consecutive Olympics and to have won four individual medals, the Italian captain qualified for the 1500m final by finishing the 30 laps in 14'42"56, preceded only by Irishman Daniel Wiffen - Olympic gold in the 800m - who set the time at 14'40"34.
