Who is Milena Gabanelli?

Milena Jole Gabanelli, better known as Milena Gabanelli, was born in Nibbiano (Piacenza) on June 9, 1954 (she is almost 70 years old). She lived until she was 19 years old in Desio, in Brianza, then moved to Bologna, where she graduated from DAMS with a thesis in Film History. She has been collaborating with Rai since 1982, where she creates current affairs programs on some regional networks. In the same year, she participated in the Venice Film Festival with the documentary A Jean Eustache about the French director Jean Eustache. Then she moved on to reporting for the "Special Mixer" news program.

In the early nineties, Milena Gabanelli participated in the introduction of new video journalism standards in Italy, working alone with a portable video camera, which created a more direct style in interviews and in general in the way of making television programs. Her method becomes a subject of study in journalism schools. 

Career

In 1991, she introduced video journalism in Italy: she abandoned the crew and started working alone with her video camera. She theorized the method and taught it in journalism schools. In 1994 Giovanni Minoli proposed her to take care of an experimental program that proposed the services made by the new video journalists. "Professione Reporter" was a real school, a program breaking with traditional schemes and methods. In 1997, she proposed "Report": an old-style investigation that through the use of new means reduces costs, and allows authors to devote more time to the investigation. The journalist hosted Report until 2016, when she announced that she wanted to leave her post to Sigfrido Ranucci, who is still the face of the program. In 2017 she resigned from Rai and began collaborating with Corriere della Sera, where she runs the Dataroom column. Since 2018 she has also been collaborating with Tg La7 by Enrico Mentana, who once a week discusses with Gabanelli one of the topics covered in her column. 

Private life: husband and daughter

Well-known TV personality but Milena Gabanelli is reserved about her private life. It is known that she is married to Luigi Bottazzi, a music teacher in a middle school; they have a daughter named Giulia, who graduated in Law. About her husband, she told Forbes in 2021: "I have been married to a middle school music teacher for 41 years, we have a daughter who has been living and working in Brussels for years (sic!). I hate worldliness and dinners where 'you meet people'" and to Libero she said: "Thanks to the understanding of my husband, a music teacher in a middle school I have reconciled family and assault journalism. He has always been my accomplice, he did not prevent me from leaving for the most remote areas of the world even when our daughter was very small. I have been very lucky". 

Three curiosities

• In 1999 she took the state exam to become a professional journalist, but she did not pass because she failed the oral exam. For this reason, she is still only a publicist journalist.
• Many people do not know that as a young girl she was also a musician: she played bass in an all-female rock band.
• In a note submitted to Rai in 2017, Milena Gabanelli stated that she wanted to resign because "the conditions do not allow to produce appreciable results".
