Alex Schwazer is back to marching. The Olympic champion in Beijing 2008 in the 50 km competed this morning in San Biagio di Callalta, in the province of Treviso. The South Tyrolean took on the 10,000 meters at the Absolute Club Championships wearing the colors of Atletica San Biagio. The former Italian athlete, who had announced his retirement, completed his race in first place in 43:11.37, "also weighed down by 60 seconds of penalty," reports the QueenAtletica portal. A good time for Schwazer, with a 5 km split better than that of July 19, 2024, in Arco di Trento, on the day of the Bolzano marcher’s return to competition after an 8-year doping ban. Last summer, however, he failed to complete the 20 km due to physical problems (sciatica). But at 40 years old – celebrated in December – Alex decided to try again in an amateur race in Veneto and this time crossed the finish line. On July 7, Schwazer finished serving his second doping ban, which came after testing positive for testosterone in 2016 upon his return to competition. Unlike the first positive test for EPO detected before the London 2012 Olympics, Alex has always contested the second positive test, which effectively prevented him from participating in the Rio and Paris Games. To return to top levels after the first three-year stop, the Vipiteno marcher chose to rely on Sandro Donati, a coach championing the fight against doping. The second Schwazer case was much discussed, following many inconsistencies in a story that had many developments, especially the dismissal of the criminal proceedings against him for "not having committed the act" ordered by the Gip of the Bolzano Court, Walter Pelino, in February 2021. Sports justice, however, has never changed its stance. There was no reduction of the eight-year doping ban imposed in August 2016 during the Rio de Janeiro Olympics for Alex.
